On the Road to Jerusalem – Part 2

Welcome back to Pastor’s Connection.  This is Part 2 to On the Road to Jerusalem.  There were three groups of responders that engaged our LORD on the Road to Jerusalem.  Let’s look at the first group.

First Responders Received Him as Savior, King, and Healer                   (Mk 11:1-11)

Let me provide some context because a text with no context is a pretext to nonsense.  This is known as the triumphant entry into Jerusalem.  This was Sunday before Passover and Jews from all over the Roman world had traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover.  Jesus traveled from Bethany to Bethphage down the Mount of Olives.  On the Road to Jerusalem he came upon three types of people..three responders to Him.  You know when Jesus shows up you must respond and these three groups will tell a lot about where we are in our walk with Jesus today.  The first responders were people that knew Him, adored Him and received Him as Savior, King and Healer. They showed Him adoration and praise.  Mark 11:9–10 (NKJV) says it like this

9 Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
10  Blessed is the kingdom of our father David
That comes in the name of the Lord!
     Hosanna in the highest!”

“Hosanna is a Greek transliteration of a Hebrew word that means to save, and it had become a word that was a shout of praise”.  They said Hosanna like we say today “HALLELUJAH”.  Hosanna, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!, quoting from Psalm 118: 25,26 which is a messianic Psalm.

Psalm 118:25–26 (NKJV)

25  Save now, I pray, O Lord
O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity.
26  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
We have blessed you from the house of the Lord

Blessed is the Kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the LORD!  They assigned these pilgrim chants to Jesus…This is why he was born….the angel that heralded his birth said it this way in Luke 2:11

Luke 2:11 (NKJV)
11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
And Jesus said that in Luke 19:10 (NKJV)

10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

They adored Him and recognized him as Savior…..Hosanna.

The parallel text in Luke 19: 36-40 said they called Him the KING.

Luke 19:38 (NKJV)

38 saying:
“ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of theLord!’
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

They adored Him as Savior, they adored him as King. They needed a King to rescue them from Roman rule.  And coming on a donkey Jesus laid claim to his own form of Kingship fulfilling Zech 9:9.

Zechariah 9:9 (NKJV)
The Coming King
9   “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
     Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
     Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.

And the John parallel text it says that they called him in John 12:13…..”The King of Israel”. The parallel text in John12:12-19 also said they came out because of the witness of those that knew him as a healer.  Look at John 12:17–18 (NKJV)

17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.

They adored him as Healer.   They had seen Him raise Lazarus from the dead, but he had healed many others.  Mark 1:32 (NKJV) speaks of just one instance of the many healing of Jesus

32 At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. He healed the sick, raised the dead, gave sight to the blind, made the deaf hear and the dumb to talk.

They adored Him as Savior, they adored Him as King, and they adored Him as Healer.

How many reading this knows Jesus…… Do you know Him as a Savior…did he save your soul from hell….did He save you from alcohol….did he save you from drugs…did he rescue you from being a thief…a liar…a promiscuous man or woman…..a loose lipped gossiper… DID HE save you?!  Testify…tell somebody!  Is HE your KING…ruling over your life…..defeating your enemies on your behalf…..Tell somebody about what HE has done for you!!!!  Testify…tell somebody! How many know Jesus as a Healer.  Has He healed you or someone in your family …. Even if your loved one is now in heaven…they are perfectly healed now.  No more tears…..no more pain…no more diabetes….no more high blood pressure….no more cancer. Be a witness tell somebody about the goodness of Jesus. These first responders were the disciples, the praisers and the witnesses.

Look around you for opportunities to be a witness…to be a praiser and to be a disciple.  All are associated with your worship.  When you get a chance tell somebody about what God has done for you.  When you are in service and out of service look for opportunity to give Jesus the Praise…because he is worthy of Praise and He inhabits the praises of his people.  And live as a disciple or learner of Christ.  More of us to be in Sunday School and Bible Study to learn more about Jesus, the more we know about HIM the more we can testify about who He is. The first responders received HIM as Savior, King and Healer…Check out Part 3 of On the Road to Jerusalem to see how the second group responded to Jesus!
